Norman Education Research Day 2024 Highlights
On Wednesday, June 5, students, faculty and researchers came together to celebrate the history and future of health professions education research at Norman Education Research Day. This one-day event takes place in-person in early June, and is an opportunity to hear from scholars in health professions education research around topics in technology, EDI, health and education policy, and more!
Dr. Stefanie Sebok-Syer from Stanford University gave the keynote address about measuring interdependence in health care systems and teams for assessment.
The presentation was recorded and will be made available in the coming months.

We welcome you to connect with other professionals who, like you, share a passion to create a brighter world for health professionals and address emerging issues within health professions education. The abstract submission portal for NERD 2025 and registration to attend will be made available in the early new year.

NERD is named after one of McMaster’s longstanding faculty, Dr. Geoff Norman. Dr. Norman is a Professor Emeritus, a Scientist at McMaster Education Research, Innovation & Theory (MERIT), and a member of the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact.

2024 Health Professions Educator Award
Suzanne Archie
Dr. Suzanne Archie, MD, FRCPC, is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences and a psychiatrist at the East Region Mental Health Clinic. She is the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Director for the Post Graduate Medical Education at McMaster University and is Chair of the Anti-Black Racism Task Force for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences. She has published on different aspects of early intervention, including substance abuse, program evaluation, and ethnic diversity in pathways to care for a first episode of psychosis. Her research has been supported by the Canadian Institute of Health Research, Peter Boris Centre for Cannabis Research, and the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Currently, Dr. Archie is engaged in knowledge translation projects involving video game technology educate youth about cannabis and psychosis, particularly those from Black African and Caribbean communities. She is also conducting a program evaluation of an educational module designed to advance the mental health of Black children and youth.
The Health Professions Educator Award is designed to encourage and reward the continued excellence of health professions education and scholarship within McMaster University. Nominees will be senior faculty and leaders in their respective educational schools that have made substantial contributions to education in the Faculty of Health Sciences including teaching, mentorship, educational scholarship, or research, throughout their careers. Virtual
Join Dr. Renate Kahlke for a series of four 1.5-hour virtual workshops designed to support McMaster FHS faculty in developing a qualitative health professions education study. Through a combination of short presentations by qualitative research experts and peer and instructor feedback, you will learn about and develop qualitative research questions and design a study to answer an educational problem in your practice.
To participate, you must be interested in qualitative education (including continuing education) or related quality improvement research and may be interested in submitting a proposal to any grant competition (e.g. Royal College Grants such as MERG and CanMEDS [due in March], FHS education grant [due in April]). Facilitators will support you in determining the best approach to securing funding. Participants can have any level of familiarity with qualitative methods. We welcome novice researchers!
