MERIT/HSED Graduate Fellow
MERIT & Health Science Education MSc Program (HSED) welcome
Rebecca Madan as this year’s Graduate Fellow.
Rebecca is a thesis student in the McMaster Health Science Education (HSED) Program and a recent graduate of the Arts and Science Program at Mac. She is interested in the relationship between health science education and health equity. In her final year of undergraduate studies, Rebecca completed a thesis exploring how undergraduate prospective medial students make clinical decisions about 2SLGBTQIA+ patients. As the MERIT-HSED graduate fellow, Rebecca aims to expand her undergraduate thesis and create educational interventions to reduce implicit bias.

MERIT Faculty Fellows
MERIT welcomes Dr. Desigen Reddy and Ms. Allison Sohanlal as the
Fall 2024 faculty fellows.
Desigen Reddy is a pediatric anesthesiologist based at McMaster University Medical Centre, and an associate clinical professor in the Department of Anesthesiology. He has also the current Program Director for the department and has been in this role for the past 7 years. He did his medical training at the Nelson Mandela Medical School in South Africa, a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia at Erasmus University in the Netherlands and has been attached to Hamilton and McMaster University now for the past 23 years. Whilst at McMaster Desi completed his Master’s degrees in Health Research Methodology and Health Science Education. He has a strong interest in Global Health, and is the current Canadian representative for pediatric anesthesia at the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiology, as well as the past examiner in anesthesia for the University of Guyana.
Allison Sohanlal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University. Allison leads the clinical education program within the Child Life and Pediatric Psychosocial Care graduate program, supporting child life interns and affiliated internship partners across the country. Allison is a dedicated advocate in the child life community, committed to mentoring, inspiring, and empowering students, faculty, staff, and community partners to build a bright future for pediatric psychosocial care. Her research project will examine the barriers, challenges and opportunities in the selection and matching processes for child life internships across Canada.

Norman Education Research Day 2024 Highlights
On Wednesday, June 5, students, faculty and researchers came together to celebrate the history and future of health professions education research at Norman Education Research Day. This one-day event takes place in-person in early June, and is an opportunity to hear from scholars in health professions education research around topics in technology, EDI, health and education policy, and more!
Dr. Stefanie Sebok-Syer from Stanford University gave the keynote address about measuring interdependence in health care systems and teams for assessment.

Virtual
Join Dr. Renate Kahlke for a series of four 1.5-hour virtual workshops designed to support McMaster FHS faculty in developing a qualitative health professions education study. Through a combination of short presentations by qualitative research experts and peer and instructor feedback, you will learn about and develop qualitative research questions and design a study to answer an educational problem in your practice.
To participate, you must be interested in qualitative education (including continuing education) or related quality improvement research and may be interested in submitting a proposal to any grant competition (e.g. Royal College Grants such as MERG and CanMEDS [due in March], FHS education grant [due in April]). Facilitators will support you in determining the best approach to securing funding. Participants can have any level of familiarity with qualitative methods. We welcome novice researchers!

2024 Innovations in Education Conference
SAVE THE DATE
December 5 & 6, 2024
This fully virtual, two-day event aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas, experiences, and best practices among educators, researchers, administrators, students and other stakeholders. By utilizing a variety of formats including short papers, poster presentations, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, we will critically explore key considerations for implementing these strategies. This includes addressing diverse student needs, managing technology integration, adopting new policies, fostering student engagement, and promoting equity and accessibility in education.
Call for Proposals
Proposals should consider how conference sub-themes are interpreted, understood, enacted, and investigated within educational research and/or the scholarship of teaching and learning. Presenters should be prepared to present virtually on either December 5th or 6th.
The deadline for submissions is 11:59pm EDT on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

Call for Reviewers
Faculty, instructors, staff, and students to volunteer to review abstracts (350 words) for the Innovations in Education Conference. As a reviewer, you are also able to submit a proposal for a conference session. The review team will do their best to reduce or eliminate any conflicts of interest for those who volunteer to review and are also submitting a proposal. Abstracts will be available online on or before Tuesday, October 8, and you will be required to complete your reviews by Wednesday, October 30, at 5:00pm.
If you are willing to serve as a reviewer, please complete the online Call for Reviewers form by Friday, September 20, at 5:00pm. The form will ask for your institutional affiliation. This information will appear in the conference program and on the website.

CELS is an interactive learning and simulation centre provides inclusivity inside of the hybrid learner experience. CELS hosts state-of-the-art technology for onsite and virtual simulations in both a work and/or classroom environment. We lead high-quality educational initiatives and leverage innovative technology for a superior learner experience. The technology can capture large educational sessions to break out rooms to virtual education. CELS host learners, educators, SJHH partners, SJHS network, and external partnerships. SJHH has over 5,500 staff and 4,000 learners annually that have access to the learning capabilities and capacity of CELS. Our commitment drives the development, implementation, and sustainability of a positive and equitable learning environment resonating with our academic and healthcare system partners.

This series serves as an educational and inspirational resource, bringing together, highlighting, and celebrating the experiences of these individuals through rich and meaningful stories.
