New game that prepares budding researchers for publication criticism
Drs. Teresa Chan, Jonathan Sherbino and Sandra Monteiro have produced a new serious game,
‘Dear Reviewer 2’, aiming to help early-career researchers navigate common review questions and criticisms for studies submitted for publication.
The game can be played with two to eight players and includes three card difficulty levels. The point of the game is that everyone has a chance to respond to reviewer comments and gain points by having the best response. It’s a really fun, low-stakes environment where you can learn how to respond to criticism.
This tongue-in-cheek game builds on the lived experience of new and seasoned researchers and will provide many laughs. It will also serve as a reminder of how hard research can be and how hard we can be on each other.

Dear Reviewer 2 is now available for purchase. All proceeds will go towards funding further research and innovation at McMaster University.

The Game Changers podcast, brought to you by McMaster Continuing Professional Development Office, is dedicated to exploring the stories of local, bold, and diverse game changers in academia!
This series serves as an educational and inspirational resource, bringing together, highlighting, and celebrating the experiences of these individuals through rich and meaningful stories. The goal is to honor equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and Indigenous reconciliation priorities, which academic institutions have sought to prioritize. However, meaningful change can only occur when voices are heard and ideas are nurtured — and Game Changers aims to do exactly that.
New episodes launch monthly, offering narratives that showcase the triumphs and resilience of equity-deserving groups in STEM.
